A Light-Filled Living Room in Essex

Project type

Living Room Styling: A Calm, Layered Family Space

Date

2025

Location

Chigwell, Essex, UK

This project focused on refreshing and styling an existing living room in a period home on Burrow Road in Chigwell, Essex. Rather than undertaking structural changes, the brief was to elevate the space through thoughtful styling, improved lighting and carefully balanced decorative elements that enhance the character already present in the home.

The room centres around a traditional fireplace, which was styled to become a calm focal point with layered textures, soft greenery and warm brass accents. A large round mirror was introduced above the mantle to reflect light and visually expand the space, while sculptural accessories and dried florals add subtle interest without overwhelming the architecture.

Throughout the room, lighting was carefully layered to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for both day and evening living. Table lamps, wall lights and soft ambient sources were positioned to highlight key features and create gentle pools of light across the room.

Natural materials, muted tones and organic shapes were used to bring cohesion to the space, creating a relaxed and timeless interior that feels personal, calm and lived-in. The result is a quietly elegant living area where existing furniture and decorative pieces are brought together through considered styling and balance.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful styling, lighting and composition can transform an existing room without renovation — enhancing what is already there while creating a more harmonious and welcoming home.
