It’s usually composition.
In real homes, great interior design comes down to three core styling principles: proportion, rhythm and focal point.

✔ Proportion: Your rug should anchor the sofa (at least the front legs on). Your coffee table should be around two-thirds the sofa length. Correct scale instantly makes a living room feel balanced.
✔ Rhythm: Repeat a colour, material or shape at least three times to create flow. This is how layered interiors feel cohesive rather than cluttered.
✔ Focal Point: Every room needs one visual anchor. Hang artwork at eye level (approx. 145cm from floor) and ensure it’s 60–75% of the furniture width below.

Rule of thumb: go larger with rugs, art and lighting than you think.

2) Balance (aka “Does it feel calm and steady?”)

Balance is about visual weight — not perfect symmetry.

✖️ Heavy sofa on one side + nothing opposite = lopsided
“If I split the room in half, does one side feel heavier?”

3) Colour Harmony (aka “Why does it look so put together?”)

Harmony comes from repeating tones — not matching everything.

Perfect for simplicity-based styles (Japandi, Scandi-Calm, Urban Organic). Flexible spatial divisions Use as room dividers, wardrobe doors, or sliding panels to define zones without heavy walls.
